Santa Fe Springs, Calif. (June, 2013) – The 2012-13 Volkswagen Golf R is the culmination of 30-years of fun “hot hatchbacks” that started with the original Rabbit in 1974. Built as the ultimate version of the sixth generation Golf, its more powerful engine, all-wheel-drive system, and aggressive, race-inspired styling really set it apart from the average Golf. But even with its lowered stance and performance-oriented suspension, the Golf R still exhibits noticeable body-roll during cornering. The suspension experts at Hotchkis now offer a solution for this with new bolt-on, adjustable sport sway bars that allow drivers to precisely tune the handling of their car for maximum control and minimal roll.
The engineers at VW wanted the Golf R to appeal to hardcore driving enthusiasts, but because it is based on a front-wheel-drive platform, the Golf R still exhibits inherent understeer and considerable body roll that cause slow transitions and an overall vague feel. Looking to minimize this body roll, neutralize the understeer, and increase overall driver control, Hotchkis engineers spent hours on the track and the street developing upgraded sway bars that work as well on a stock vehicle as they do on a modified one.
The front 1-inch (25.4 mm) tubular bar features two settings that increase roll stiffness by 65% or 100% over the stock bar. The 1-inch (25.4 mm) rear bar has three levels of adjustment that increases the rear roll stiffness from 55% all the way up to 145% over stock. With so many different settings, these bars allow the driver to tailor the roll stiffness to match their car’s tires and suspension, as well as their own driving style. Both front and rear sway bars also feature welded on centering rings as well as greasable polyurethane bushings and heavy duty brackets with built-in Zerk fittings for easy maintenance.
